Language is the human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication, and a language is any specific example of such a system. The scientific study of language is called linguistics. The English word “language” derives ultimately from Indo-European *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s “tongue, speech, language” through Latin lingua, “language; tongue”, and Old French language “language”.

In making a speech one must study three points: first, the means of producing persuasion; second, the language; third the proper arrangement of the various parts of the speech.

Both dreams and myths are important communications from ourselves to ourselves. If we do not understand the language in which they are written, we miss a great deal of what we know and tell ourselves in those hours when we are not busy manipulating the outside world.

“Erich Fromm”
